Producing the Goods
John Hurd’s Organic Watercress
With decades of family history in growing watercress, John Hurd was the first watercress grower to gain organic status back in 1994. Since 1991 silt and debris had been collected in a pioneering settlement tank, ensuring that water returned to the river clear and clean.
The eight acres of watercress beds are watered by pure water from a borehole into the chalk aquifer. The beds are flooded and sluiced to keep the green lush growth growing cleanly. No pesticides are used.
In an adjacent business trout are grown by Purely Organic using the water that has passed through the watercress beds enriching it with 3 sorts of freshwater shrimp.
Both producers have received accolades from Rick Stein and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Trout, watercress and much more are sold direct from the Purely Organic shop on the A350 at Longbridge Deverill and at farmers markets. [Waitrose stock the watercress]
