Producing the Goods 2
Eccleshall farmer's market
Although only a small gathering, the farmer's market in the courtyard of the Royal Oak, Eccleshall, Staffordshire, has very specific rules about content. The sign pictured above reads:
"Only locally produced goods shall be eligible for sale. 'Locally produced' is defined as within 10 (ten) miles of Eccleshall town centre as the crow flies ... Producers from the area defined as local will be given preference. However, a producer from further afield may attend the market when there is no suitable/consistent local producer of a given product. In such cases, a producer may come from up to a 30 (thirty) mile radius of Eccleshall town centre and preference will be given to those closest to the original 10 mile radius ... All produce sold must be brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the stallholder using ingredients from within the defined local area. All processed goods should contain at least one ingredient of origin from within the defined local area. All processed goods should contain at least one ingredient of origin from within the defined local area or using seasonal British produce."
Produce to be found includes potatos from Hanchurch, locally-baked pies, meat, chocolate, cheese from Staffordshire Cheese and beer from the Leek brewery, as well as willow crafts.
