Bramley’s Seedling, the most famous and popular cooking apple was planted as a pip by Mary Ann Brailsford between 1809-13 in Church Street, Southwell. It still survives in the garden today. Cuttings were taken by Henry Merryweather in 1856 and sold commercially, named after the then owner Mr Bramley. It is rich in vitamin C, and excellent for apple pies.
