Some Derbyshire Fruit

Dessert Apples
Beeley Pippin raised by Rev C Sculthorpe around 1880 in Beeley. Belledge Pippin from Derby, first recorded 1818. New Bess Pool raised by J Stevens of Stanton-by-Dale before 1850, thought to be a seedling from Bess Pool.

Cooking Apples
Newton Wonder a prolific apple, popular until recently owing to its shiny golden-yellow skin and attractive red stripes and flush. 1,840 lbs once recorded from one tree. Sources differ as to its origin. One account says it was raised by Mr Taylor of King’s Newton, Melbourne, from Dumelow’s Seedling x Blenheim Orange in about 1887. Another says it was discovered growing out of a thatched roof of the Hardinge Arms, a pub in King’s Newton. Traditionally used in mincemeat and in stuffings for turkey at Christmas. Good in salads as it isn’t overwhelmed by the dressing. Keeps until Easter.

Dual Purpose Apples
Lamb’s Seedling rasied around 1866 by Joseph Lamb, Head Gardener of Mr Meynell of Meynell Langly, Derby.

This list was compiled using many sources including The New Book of Apples by Joan Morgan and Alison Richards (Ebury Press 2002).
