Foulkes’ Foremost raised by F Foulkes of Headington, Oxford in 1938.
Oxford Conquest raised in 1927 by WF Wastie of Eynsham.
The following raised by WF Wastie of Eynsham, in 1940s: Jennifer, Jennifer Wastie, Oxford Beauty, Oxford Hoard, Oxford Sunrise, Peggy’s Pride, Red Army.
Cooking Apples
Eynsham Challenger raised in 1935 by WF Wastie of Eynsham. Eynsham Dumpling raised by WF Wastie of Eynsham. Hanwell Souring, thought to have been raised at Hanwell near Banbury, recorded 1820. Oxford Yeoman raised by WF Wastie of Eynsham, in 1940s.
Dual Purpose Apples
Blenheim Orange – an old favourite. Raised in about 1740 by a tailor, George Kempster, in his garden in Manor Road, Old Woodstock, just outside Blenheim Park. It was a local landmark. People came by coach loads to marvel at the tree and to take scions from it. Known as Kempster’s Pippin until 1811. Slow to come into crop. It has a distinctive nutty flavour. Excellent for making apple charlotte. Greenish-yellow streaked with red.
